James Carter is a dramatist, director, producer and sometimes performer. He is the Associate Director of terraNOVA Collective and the Season Producer of The Ensemble Studio Theatre. As a writer with terraNOVA Collective: Baby Steps (main stage production), FEEDER: A Love Story (Center Stage, NY – terraNOVA’s 3rd Annual Solo Arts Festival), and a staged reading of Family Wayward (terraNOVA’s Groundbreakers Reading Series). One acts include: “Billy’s Bad Behavior” (part 1) and “Number Four” (part 2) with Impetuous Theater Group’s 2006 47:59 Festival; “The Christmas Card” for Center Stage, NY’s ‘Open 24 Hours’ hosted by John Patrick Shanley. Additionally, James has written several full-length screenplays including Prana, Exiled, Double Shift, and the adaptation of Baby Steps. Director for terraNOVA - Buck Fever (main stage), Breathing Affirmations: Catharsis Postmidnight (Center Stage, NY - terraNOVA's 2nd Annual Solo Arts Festival 2004) Oedipus Next (terraNOVA’s Solo Arts Festival 2005). Other directing credits - The Gold Wutahkee (THEATRIX Comedy at The Duplex), Don Nigro’s Seascape with Sharks and Dancer (The Producer’s Club), Impetuous Theater’s 47:59 Play Festival 2005 (Center Stage, NY). Producer - Artists’ Night, dancelikeforever, Baby Steps, Buck Fever, terraNOVA’s Solo Arts Festival (2004, 2005 & 2006). He’s performed his poetry at venues and events such as Nuyorican Poets’ Café (NYC); Bar 13 (NYC); Bowery Poetry Club (NYC); The Lobby, Center Stage, NY (NYC); Westside Rhyme, Various Venues (NYC); Untie the Tongue (host), Grand Central Bar (Williamsburg, Brooklyn); Artists’ Night (host/producer), L’Abattoir (Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Katrina Relief (Master of Ceremonies), Lemon (NYC), Retro Vaudeville Variety Night, Lannie’s Cabaret (Denver, CO).
He is also the curator for the D-Lounge, a 75-seat cabaret venue beneath the Daryl Roth Theatre just off Union Square. He programs music, spoken word, comedy, performance art and special events in the space on the dark nights of Fuerzabruta, which plays in the theatre upstairs.
